Canadian jazz group The Cookers Quintet have announced their latest album The Path, their first in six years.
The quintet features the core of tenor saxophonist Ryan Oliver, trumpeter Tim Hamel and bassist Alex Coleman, along with guests Bernie Senensky on piano and Joe Poole on the drums.
With a sound firmly rooted in the ’60s hard-bop movement, the Cookers Quintet take inspiration from the likes of Dexter Gordon, Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver and Hank Mobley.
The Path follows the band’s first three albums: Vol. 1 (2011), Vol. 2 (2015) and Vol. 3 (2016).

During the fall of 2021, while on tour in the west coast of Canada, the group performed a new set of original compositions to live audiences which subsequently became their latest eight-track studio album.
The Path features three pieces each by Oliver and Hamel, and two by Coleman.
“With our fourth record, we wanted to create something that maintained the group’s original voice and sensibilities while reflecting inspiration from some of our ’60s jazz heroes,” says Oliver.
