Grammy-winning drummer, composer, vocalist and producer Terri Lyne Carrington is joining students at Humber College for an artist-in-residence showcase next month.
Carrington has recorded nine albums as a leader and dozens more as a sidewoman for artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Wayne Shorter, John Scofield, Dianne Reeves, Herbie Hancock and Diana Krall.
Her latest record, Waiting Game, was named one of DownBeat’s top albums of 2019. The album “absorbs the Black Lives Matter movement’s simmering fury and converts it into artistic fuel as Carrington addresses homophobia, the genocide of Native Americans and the exile of political prisoners,” the magazine wrote in its review.
Humber’s artist-in-residence program brings in an acclaimed international artist to work with students in the college’s music program. After three days of master classes, lectures and mentorship, Carrington will join students on stage on Friday, March 6, to showcase their work together.
Carrington has won three Grammy Awards for her albums The Mosaic Project and Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue and for Dianne Reeves’s Beautiful Life. In 2013, she became the first woman to win a Grammy for best jazz instrumental album with Money Jungle.
In 2007, Carrington was appointed professor at her alma mater, the Berklee College of Music. She has served as artistic director of the Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival and currently serves as founder and artistic director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice.
