Guitarist and vocalist Spencer Mackenzie has just released his new album Preach to My Soul.
The 22-year-old talent’s third studio recording finds him reaching for new heights and explorations in his bluesy sound.
The new release follows his 2018 sophomore album Cold November, which spent time at the top of Canada’s blues chart and earned him three Independent Blues Awards nominations. Prior to that, Mackenzie was named the Niagara Music Awards’ blues artist of the year in 2017 and the Maple Blues Awards’ new artist of the year in 2016.
Mackenzie participated in JAZZ.FM91’s Jazzology program in 2021.
Preach to My Soul represents a new direction for Mackenzie, who aimed to continue captivating blues audiences while covering new ground with rock, soul and roots music. Mackenzie puts his artistry on full display with his seasoned melodic phrasing and creative tone-crafting to fit whatever moods he pursues.
Here, Mackenzie is joined by a wide array of musicians including keyboardist Miles Evans, bassists Steve Pelletier and Stacey Shopsowitz, drummer Adam Cannon, vocalist Chantal Williams, saxophonist Julian Niali, trumpeter Steve Dyte and guitarist Steve Strongman. Juno-winning blues musician Steve Strongman also makes a special appearance on Paranoia Blues.
“In the new recording, I’m thoroughly connected to my roots. The title track Preach to My Soul essentially refers to just that,” says Mackenzie. “The powerful influence from those that came before me are fundamentally preaching to my soul, channelling their passion, communicating their love for the blues to come through me in my music.”
