Grammy-nominated vocalist Somi is celebrating Valentine’s Day with the new single Love Tastes Like Strawberries, featuring a guest appearance by Gregory Porter.
The song is the third single from Somi’s upcoming album Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba, a tribute to the late South African singer-songwriter and civil rights activist.
The album is set to be released on March 4 to coincide with what would have been Makeba’s 90th birthday. It was originally scheduled to be released last summer.
Listen to Love Tastes Like Strawberries below:
“Many years ago, and long before the making of this album, my mentor, the late Hugh Masekela, told me to check out Love Tastes Like Strawberries as a cover,” Somi explained in a statement. “I invited Gregory Porter to record it with me as a duet in tribute to Makeba’s 1965 Grammy Award-winning album An Evening with Belafonte/Makeba that featured a series of duets with her mentor, Harry Belafonte.”
Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba features Somi’s renditions of Makeba’s best-known songs; she first kicked off the album with her version of the 1967 hit single Pata Pata.
The album will feature several more guest appearances, including Seun Kuti (Fela Kuti’s youngest son), Angelique Kidjo, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Msaki, Thandiswa Mazwai, and Nduduzo Makhathini,
Somi’s last album Holy Room: Live at the Alte Oper was nominated for a Grammy Award and made JAZZ.FM91’s list of the best albums of 2020.
