JAZZ.FM91 is delighted to announce that Sarah Ramsay is the 2022 recipient of the Peter Appleyard Scholarship.
This annual scholarship honours the legacy of vibraphonist Peter Appleyard and his incredible contribution to Canadian music by providing a current undergraduate jazz student with a scholarship in the amount of $500 for use toward their tuition. Eligible schools include Humber College, the University of Toronto, York University and Mohawk College.
Appleyard was a true giant of Canadian jazz whose commitment to music education and growing the talent of the next generation of Canadian jazz musicians endures to the present day.
Sarah Ramsay is a saxophonist based in Toronto, currently going into her third year in Humber’s Bachelor of Music program. She began studying in Ottawa with Mike Tremblay and has since had the honour to study with greats of the Toronto scene including Mark Promane and Alex Dean.
Ramsay has spent the past year developing her abilities on doubling instruments through Hilario Durán’s latin ensemble on the flute and the Toronto All-Star Big Band on the clarinet. She strives to become a versatile musician in both instruments and genres and hopes to continue developing these skills in her studies and through other opportunities as she continues to navigate the music scene.
“I am honoured to be the recipient of the Peter Appleyard Scholarship administered by JAZZ.FM91, and I give my thanks to the Appleyard family,” said Ramsay. “In learning about this award I discovered yet another Canadian gem and the versatility he showed through his playing and composing. I hope to demonstrate that same versatility and enthusiasm in my playing as I continue pursuing my greatest passion, music.”
