Jazz artists Kenny Garrett and The Baylor Project are among the winners of this year’s NAACP Image Awards.
The annual awards ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 26, honoured outstanding performances in film, television, theatre, music, and literature.
Kenny Garrett’s Sounds From the Ancestors was named the year’s outstanding instrumental jazz album, emerging atop a field that included Brandee Younger, Orrin Evans, Jazmin Ghent and Nathan Mitchell.
The Baylor Project’s Generations won the award for outstanding vocal jazz album. The other nominees were Jazzmeia Horn, Ledisi, Freda Payne and Rubén Blades y Roberto Delgado & Orquesta.
In other categories, Jennifer Hudson won the award for outstanding actress for her portrayal of Aretha Franklin in the biopic Respect. Andra Day was also nominated for the award for her starring role in The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Both of those films were nominated for outstanding motion picture and outstanding soundtrack/compilation album, but lost to Netflix’s The Harder They Fall.
