The seventh volume of the Miles Davis Bootleg Series features two discs of previously unreleased studio material that the jazz legend recorded between 1982 and 1985.
That’s What Happened 1982-1985: The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 includes studio cuts from the Star People, Decoy and You’re Under Arrest sessions, along with a third disc containing the current Record Store Day exclusive Miles Davis – Live in Montreal July 7, 1983.
Listen to What’s Love Got to Do With It below.
Eight of the ten tracks on the first disc are unreleased studio tracks from the sessions that resulted in 1983’s Star People, his last to feature his longtime producer Teo Macero. The first disc’s other two tracks were recorded during the sessions for 1984’s Decoy; the previously unreleased cassette recording came from the private collection of John Scofield.
The second disc contains unreleased studio recordings from the sessions for 1985’s You’re Under Arrest, the album that made jazz standards out of pop hits like Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time and Michael Jackson’s Human Nature. The previously unreleased recordings were newly mixed by Steve Berkowitz and Dave Darlington at Bass Hit Recording in New York.
The third disc features Miles Davis performing at the Theatre St. Denis in Montreal on July 7, 1983. Released for the first time as a double-LP exclusively for Record Store Day this year, the recording showcases one of Miles Davis’s final great bands including John Scofield, Bill “The Other Bill Evans” Evans, Darryl Jones, Al Foster and Mino Cinélu. What It Is: Montreal 7/7/83 features liner notes by Greg Tate, who wrote them as one of his final pieces before he died on Dec. 7, 2021.
The three-disc boxed set features liner notes by Marcus J. Moore and new interviews with Vince Wilburn, Jr., John Scofield, Mike Stern, Darryl Jones and Marcus Miller.
That’s What Happened was produced by the Grammy-winning team of producers Steve Berkowitz, Michael Cuscuna and Richard Seidel and mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Mark Wilder.
