Lorraine Desmarais has just released a new album called Street Beat Suite, an eight-movement work of original music composed by the Canadian jazz pianist.
The compositions on the album offer a “charming portrayal” of the riverside city of Rimouski, Que., along with songs that pay tribute to legends Chick Corea and Paquito D’Rivera.
Here, Desmarais’s trio features two of her long-time collaborators, drummer Camil Bélisle and double bassist Alec Walkington.
One of Canada’s pioneering women in jazz, Desmarais is known throughout the world for her performances as a soloist, with her trio and with her big band.
She has recorded more than a dozen albums and performed with world-renowned jazz artists such as Chick Corea, Oliver Jones, Joe Lovano, the Brubeck Brothers, Marian McPartland, Paquito D’Rivera, Ingrid Jensen, Christine Jensen, Kenny Wheeler, Guido Basso and Jane Bunnett.
In 2013, she was made a Member of the Order of Canada.
