JAZZ.FM91 declares Oscar Peterson Day
- This event has passed.
On Aug. 15, 2022, JAZZ.FM91 will honour and celebrate one of our country’s best, Oscar Peterson.
He personified excellence in everything he approached. He was a gifted and multiple award-winning musician, composer and educator, and a Canadian ambassador. His legacy lives on to this day, not only in his remarkable and timeless music but in the way he continues to inspire those who have followed.
Oscar Emmanuel Peterson was born Aug. 15, 1925. Because this day was blessed with one of history’s greatest jazz musicians, JAZZ.FM91 officially declares that Monday, Aug. 15, 2022, will be known as Oscar Peterson Day.
“Oscar gave us all a great gift, and this is a small way we can celebrate a jazz giant, forever synonymous with excellence and inspiration,” says Dana Wigle, General Manager of JAZZ.FM91.
The City of Toronto is now joining JAZZ.FM91 in marking the occasion, too. Mayor John Tory, on behalf of Toronto City Council, has proclaimed the date as Oscar Peterson Day in the city.
“Oscar Peterson is globally known as one of history’s greatest jazz pianists who is recognized for his skilled musical talents, technical precision and creative expression,” Mayor Tory writes in his proclamation. “Today, Oscar Peterson’s music continues to be enjoyed by global audiences as a testament to his enduring legacy and lasting contributions to jazz and the arts.”
Oscar Peterson Day will feature special programming and culminate in a special Live to Air concert featuring pianist Eric Reed and bassist Dave Young in a duet performance in the Long & McQuade Performance Hall at JAZZ.FM91.
The host for this Live to Air concert will be Céline Peterson, the daughter of Oscar and host of our program No, I Do Not Play Piano.
Join us in celebrating Oscar Peterson Day on JAZZ.FM91!
