Kendrick Scott explores new trio setting on Corridors
By Adam Feibel2023/01/27
Kendrick Scott is set to release Corridors, his first compositional treatment for a trio of saxophone, bass and drums.
It’s the Houston-born drummer and composer’s third album with Blue Note, following 2019’s highly lauded A Wall Becomes A Bridge, recorded with his band Oracle.
The trio on Corridors features saxophonist Walter Smith III and bassist Reuben Rogers.
Listen to the What Day Is It? below:
Originally commissioned by Rio Sakairi for the Jazz Gallery’s 2020 Artist Fellowship Series, Corridors features eight original compositions plus a new arrangement of the Bobby Hutcherson tune Isn’t This My Sound Around Me?
Born during the pandemic lockdown, the record focuses on posing outward questions instead of inward contemplation.
“I often write about something that I’m going through,” says Scott, “but for this record I wanted to zoom out from my perspective and instead, try to deal with everyone’s. The pandemic forced everyone to deal with the shadows they had been running from.”
Here’s the track listing:
What Day Is It?
A Voice Through the Door
One Door Closes
Isn’t This My Sound Around Me?
One Door Closes, Another Opens
Your Destiny Awaits
Kendrick Scott’s Corridors is out March 3, 2023, via Blue Note.
