Saxophonist and bandleader Kamasi Washington has shared his first single of 2022 called The Garden Path.
The song, which made its debut last week, features some of Washington’s familiar collaborators including Brandon Coleman, Ronald Bruner Jr., Miles Mosley, Allakoi Peete, Cameron Graves and more.
Listen to the single below:
“The world feels turned upside down.” Washington said in a statement. “There’s so much push and pull in every direction, from everyone you meet — no one knows what to think, who to believe, or how to approach life right now. No matter how smart you are, it’s hard not to feel blind.”
After the release of the brand new single, Washington made his debut late-night television appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with a live performance of The Garden Path, backed by a 13-piece ensemble.
The Garden Path marks the Los Angeles-based saxophonist’s first original material in almost a year, following his 2021 release Sun Kissed Child. Washington had also covered My Friend of Misery for Metallica’s compilation album The Metallica Blacklist and scored the Michelle Obama documentary Becoming. His most recent studio album, Heaven and Earth, was released in 2018.
