Hilario Durán is nominated for a 2021 Canadian Screen Award for his work on the film The Cuban.
The Havana-born, Toronto-based pianist and composer earned the nod for best original song for the film’s opening theme.
Directed by Sergio Navarretta and starring Ana Golja and Louis Gossett Jr., the film tells the story of a young pre-med student whose life is profoundly changed when she befriends a former Cuban jazz musician who has been living in a nursing home since being diagnosed with dementia.
The Cuban is also nominated for the Canadian Screen Award for achievement in editing.
Shortly after the film’s commercial release last summer, Durán spoke with Laura Fernandez about the making of The Cuban‘s soundtrack.
Acknowledged by Chucho Valdés as one of the greatest Cuban pianists of the 20th century, Durán is a two-time Juno Award winner, a Grammy nominee, and a three-time National Jazz Award winner.
