Up-and-coming Canadian jazz pianist Augustine Yates has announced his debut album An Open Window.
The recording, set for release on Jan. 21, features seven original compositions for piano trio written by Yates.
With a heavy focus on musical conversation between the members and the unique possibilities of improvisation, the pieces continually shift and create a “spectrum of different emotions.” Seeking both spontaneity and control, the musicians in Yates’ trio alternately play written-out roles, improvise together, or improvise individually on specific motifs.
You can listen to the latest single Song for Jake below.
Yates also previously released Dexter, the album’s first single.
Yates, an alumnus of JAZZ.FM91’s Jazzology program, has performed frequently in venues such as The Rex, Lula Lounge and Burdock, along with numerous appearances in Canadian jazz festivals. He has performed and recorded with other ensembles including the Dennis Kwok Jazz Orchestra, Eulogy Eulogy and The Rob Lee group.
Hailing from Calgary, Yates studied classical music at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and continued to study jazz at Humber College, working with some of Canada’s finest musicians including Brian Dickinson, Robi Botos and Adrean Farrugia.
