Guitarist Andrew Marzotto is the winner of the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Emerging Jazz Artist Award for 2022.
Supported by Cheryl and Manuel Buchwald, the award comes with a $10,000 cash prize to help further the recording career of an outstanding emerging jazz artist.
Marzotto received the award from Claire Hopkinson, director and CEO of the Toronto Arts Foundation and Toronto Arts Council, and Josh Grossman, artistic director for Toronto Downtown Jazz, at an in-person celebration Wednesday at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival.
The award presentation was followed by performances by past recipients Mark Godfrey, Jesse Ryan and Joanna Majoko.
Marzotto graduated from Berklee in 2016 and returned to Toronto to become a performing and session guitarist accompanying world-class instrumentalists and vocalists. He has also appeared on a diverse collection of albums including jazz and hip hop.
This year’s other two finalists were trumpeter Madeleine Ertel and violinist Aline Homzy. They each receive a $1,000 cash prize.
The assessment panel for the 2022 Emerging Jazz Artist Award comprised Nancy Walker, Chelsea McBride, Kelsley Grant and Josh Grossman.
