Tyler Perry’s A Jazzman’s Blues will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before coming to Netflix this month.
Starring Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer, the period drama tells the story of the forbidden love, unsolved murder and family secrets of a young Black jazz singer in the deep South. The sweeping plot reaches from the 1940s to the 1980s.
The ensemble cast also features Amirah Vann, Austin Scott, Milauna Jemai Jackson, Brent Antonello, Brad Benedict, Kario Marcel, Lana Young and Ryan Eggold.
The film features music by Terence Blanchard and Aaron Zigman, with choreography by Debbie Allen.
It’s a long-awaited passion project for Perry, who wrote the screenplay 25 years ago before his rise to fame thanks to the TV series Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and his numerous films centred on the character of Madea.
A Jazzman’s Blues will have its world premiere at TIFF on Sept. 11. It will launch on Netflix on Sept. 23.
